I couldn't get the option to ask for a free room following this guide, so I searched online and came across some answers that may help. Not sure which of these is necessary but I got it in the end. - one player insists you need Encyclopedia 6 to get the option from Garte - you need to have less than 20 real - the game also counts items that you can pawn as well as the "novelty cheque" you get from Claire, so cash that in and buy booze until you have less than 20 real - I wasn't able to get the option with Kim still in my party so I got him to arrest disco girl so he left
